The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix, known as Rohoen, is a 3.5-acre authentic Japanese stroll garden located in downtown Phoenix, operating as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. The garden features a tea garden, a traditional teahouse, a 14-foot waterfall, a koi pond with over 300 koi fish, more than 1,500 tons of hand-picked rock, and more than 85 varieties of plants; monthly tea ceremonies, cultural events, and workshops are also offered. The teahouse and surrounding tea garden were completed in November 1996, and the Tankokai tea group has been practicing the Way of Tea in the teahouse for 29 years. Located in downtown Phoenix, with general admission open Tuesday through Sunday. Visitors describe the garden as a peaceful retreat within the city, noting the waterfalls, koi pond, zen garden, and friendly staff; one couple specifically noted visiting on their wedding anniversary and finding it ideal for solitude.
